Here’s some insanely great news to end the day: the unveiling of Escapade, a new Marvel superhero from the mind of io9’s co-founder and award-winning author. charlie jane anders. The start of the Escapade journey begins in Marvel’s Voices: Pride # one which follows the young superheroine’s career as a thief and explores her life as a trans mutant. His story is written by Anders and drawn by Eisner-nominated artist/cartoonist duo Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, with colors by Tamra Bonvillain as the collection’s central story.

“I’ve loved the Marvel Universe for as long as I can remember, and I may or may not sing the Spider-Man cartoon theme song in the shower on a regular basis. So I was so excited to be able to introduce a new hero to stand alongside all of my favorites,” Anders shared on marvel.com.

From the release:

Escapade, whose real name is Shela Sexton, is a transmutant who can instantly switch physical locations with another person or exchange any specific physical or abstract attributes, such as possessions, organizational status, abilities, superhuman powers, and even situations. Escapade can only hold power for a few hours at a time and must be within seven feet of the target of it, and the more complex the switch, the greater the chance of a mishap.

Fortunately for Escapade, he has an invaluable partner by his side, his tech-savvy best friend Morgan Red, along with a utility belt containing an arsenal of stolen tools and gadgets. Together, Escapade and Morgan traverse the Marvel Universe as professional thieves, stealing from corrupt and criminal organizations…until an encounter with Emma Frost and Destiny changes the course of Escapade’s life forever.

Anders added, “I hope that Escapade and Morgan Red inspire trans and non-binary people around the world to believe that they, too, can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family.”

“It’s very exciting to be a part of bringing a new character to Marvel comics,” Stein said. “Working on the script for Charlie Jane was a lot of fun, and I hope people enjoy reading about Escapade as much as we did crafting her first appearance on the page.”
