South Park Enters The Streaming Wars With New Special Out June 1

South Park is in danger yet again in the new exclusive event South Park The Streaming Wars, set to premiere June 1 on Paramount+.

Paramount+ announces the new exclusive event South Park The Streaming Warsset for premiere on June 1. A TV institution since 1997, South Park dropped its 25th season earlier in 2022 on Comedy Central. South Park Season 25 was in fact the first true run of new episodes for the venerable animated show since 2019.

of course South Park did air new content in 2020 and 2021, just not in the form of regular episodes. The first of the show’s four COVID-inspired “exclusive events,” The Pandemic Specialcame out in September 2020, and was followed the next year by South ParQ Vaccination Special, with both airing on the show’s traditional home Comedy Central. Paramount+ then got into the South Park business by streaming the exclusive events South Park: Post Covid and South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid in 2021.

Despite business being anything but usual for Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the pair clearly did get in their fair share of takes about the pandemic and everything surrounding it. Apparently ready to move on from their COVID era, South Park‘s creators are now taking on a new target: the streaming wars. As announced by Paramount+, South Park The Streaming Wars is set for release on June 1, 2022. A poster and brief teaser trailer for the latest South Park entry can be seen in the space below:

The synopsis for South Park The Streaming Wars states, “Cartman locks horns with his mom in a battle of wills, while an epic conflict unfolds and threatens South Park’s very existence.” Indeed fans of South Park will not be surprised to see Cartman locking horns with his mom, nor will they be shocked to learn that the town of South Park is once again being threatened. That synopsis clearly doesn’t give much away when it comes to the specifics of the threat on South Parkbut the new show’s title seems to indicate that Parker and Stone’s latest will have plenty to say about the on-going competition between the world’s various streaming services – and of course will likely have a few jabs reserved for Paramount+, the streaming service that happens to carry their show as well as this new exclusive event.

Indeed the arrival of this new South Park special comes as especially great news for fans who were disappointed by how short season 25 turned out to be. South Park may in fact not seem quite as relevant as it once did, but the show’s recent COVID-related specials demonstrated that Parker and Stone can still come up with some amazing storylines and timely satiric barbs when they have a mind to. It will be interesting to see what South Park The Streaming Wars adds to the show’s rich legacy.
