Vivianne Miedema closing in on one-year contract extension at Arsenal

Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema is closing in on a one-year contract extension at Arsenal, The Athletic can reveal.

The Dutch international, 25, had been linked to a move away, and was heavily rumored to be joining UEFA Women’s Champions League holders Barcelona.

The Athletic understands she was filming content at The Emirates today in preparation for an announcement later this week.

Miedema has been a key figure in the Arsenal team since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2017.

Earlier this season, she scored her 100th goal for the club, and finished the 2021-22 season with 23 goals and 9 assists in all competitions.

She is the Women’s Super League’s all-time leading scorer — having scored 72 goals in the competition.

Last November, she became the first player in WSL history to score against every team she has faced, with manager Jonas Eidevall calling her “the most explosive player in the league” in March.

Arsenal narrowly missed out on this season’s WSL title on Sunday, finishing one point behind winners Chelsea despite a 2-0 final day win over West Ham United. Sam Kerr’s wondergoal helped Chelsea to a 4-2 win over Manchester United, ensuring that Emma Hayes’ side retained the league trophy.
