Coventry households could soon benefit from 20 times faster internet speeds as part of a move to ‘destroy the digital divide’ in the city. Gigabit Networks is teaming up with CityFibre on a massive £70 million infrastructure investment they claim will be a game-changer for internet users in the city.
People living in postcodes CV1 to CV6 are the first to be able to sign up for what the companies describe as a ‘digital revolution’. David Yates of Gigabit Networks said: “Our partnering with CityFibre means we are capable of truly bridging the digital divide across the Midlands.

Gigabit Networks’ PureFibre connections use 100% fiber-optic lines directly to the building, with none of the copper wiring of traditional broadband services to ‘slow things down’. Each Fiber connection is exclusive to the property and capable of delivering at least 1 Gigabit per second speeds both ways – more than 20x faster than normal broadband.
Since the pandemic, the average household is said to have 10.3 internet-enabled devices competing for precious bandwidth, putting a strain on household broadband. In March 2021, the average download speed of UK home broadband connections was 50.4 Mbps (megabits per second).
One gigabit equates to 1,000 Mbps and would, in practice, enable users to download a full-length HD movie in 12 seconds, or get their hands on Call of Duty: Warzone in less than five minutes. Gigabit Networks say internet speed is guaranteed, but at ‘affordable pricing and high-level customer service’.
